Under the sponsorship of the President of the University of Technology, Professor Dr. Ahmed Mohamed Hassan Al-Ghabban, and supervised by the Head of the Computer Science Department, Professor Dr. Alaa Kazem Farhan, the Computer Science Department organized a workshop titled "Program Accreditation Standards for Quality Assurance and Continuous Improvement in Education." The workshop was conducted by Professor Dr. Jalal Mohammed Jalil from the Electromechanical Engineering Department in the Dr. Abbas Fadel Abdul Qadir Hall on Thursday, 2024/4/4, with the attendance of faculty and students of the department.
The workshop provided an explanation of engineering program accreditation and introduced the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a non-governmental organization that accredits learning programs in applied sciences, computing, engineering, and technology. This accreditation primarily occurs in the United States but also globally. Program accreditation involves the agency accrediting a training program after verifying the program accreditation standards and utilizing all administrative and educational capabilities for training purposes, as in postgraduate programs.
The lecturer noted that there are 500 engineering departments in Iraq, 300 of which have been audited and found not to meet the requirements. The success of this program fundamentally relies on the faculty themselves, teamwork, and the necessity of having a departmental expert council, possibly consisting of five individuals, meeting at least once a year. One of the challenges facing the program is the educator's toolkit; what is delivered from it significantly impacts the department.
In conclusion, the department head, Professor Dr. Alaa Kazem Farhan, awarded a certificate of appreciation to the lecturer, acknowledging his efforts.
